Christmas Market - Lincoln, UK :

Lincoln's Christmas Market creates a Dickensian atmosphere all of its own as the stallholders dress in Victorian costume. Just adding to the atmosphere, It's held in the city's cobbled square and is ovelooked by the floodlit 12th century cathedral and the Norman Castle. Gilding the lily, slightly, are the surrounding old black and white half timbered buildings. In the market you'll find stalls decorated and lit, and selling everything you could possibly want to find. The tantalising smells of hot chestnuts, mince pies, roasting meats and mulled wine will waft past your nose as you stroll amongst the stalls. If you're extra lucky you might even find yourself there on a day when choirs will sing under lanterns, hand-bell ringers will entertain the shoppers and street theatre might be round the corner. Browse around the stalls looking for a special gift and you're sure to find it. You'll find stalls selling everything from ornamental ironwork to delicate jewllery; from fragile glass to carved wood; whatever you're looking for it will surely be there amongst the 300 stalls that will be open for business in the grounds of the castle, around the Cathedral, Castle Hill and along Westgate. Like many of the UK Christmas Markets, Lincoln's inspiration came from Germany, from its twin town of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, to be precise and the European town is well represented amongst the many stalls, particularly those selling mulled wines, cakes and speciality sausages and foods. The first market in Lincoln was back in 1982 and had just 14 stalls. Today's market, claimed to be the largest Christmas Market in Europe, has grown to its present size from those simple foundations. If you want to visit the market at Lincoln you have only a short time in which to do so. It opens for business on Thursday 7th December at 4pm and runs until 7pm on Sunday 10th December. Best put it in your diary!
