Father Christmas Father Christmas uses a sledge drawn by a team of reindeer, to travel through the skies on Christmas Eve and, landing on the roofs of houses, will climb down the chimney with his sack of toys to leave a present by the bedside of the sleeping children. Don't dare to be awake or try to see him or there will be no presents left! Because Santa might be feeling hungry, lots of families leave a mince tart and a drink as a 'Thank you" for him. Santa's reindeer are famous in their own right and have even had songs written about them. Everyone knows about 'Rudolph, the red nosed reindeer with his shiny nose' who was chosen for great deeds one Christmas. His story was first told by an American, Robert May, who used it in a successful advertising campaign. In 1947 the tale of Rudolph's deeds was put to music by a musician called Johnny Marks. It was recorded and sung by Gene Autry a famous TV star of the day. Since then the song has been heard by millions of children and is known the world over. Every reindeer had its own name and, according to the poem "Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement Clarke Moore, which was published at the begining of the 19th century, there was Donner , Blitzen, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet and Cupid. Poor old Rudolph hadn't been born as yet! Every child will tell you that Santa lives in Lapland and spends the rest of the year stockpiling all the presents that will be needed, with the help of a company of faithful elves. Many children like to write notes to Father Christmas with a list of the toys they'd like to receive. Some, if they're lucky, can even take a trip in an aeroplane to visit him in Lapland! Not many children wil get the opportunity to visit Santa in Lapland but, in most big stores up and down the country, Santa can be found in his grotto and children can visit him there to receive a small present and tell him what they would most like to find on Christmas morning.
