The Christmas Tree : Today, we all take the Christmas tree for granted but have you ever wondered how a fir tree came to be so important at Christmas? After all, most of our indigenous trees are deciduous whereas the Christmas tree is always a conifer; unless, of course, it's man-made! It's generally accepted that the Christmas tree was introduced to us in Victorian times by Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert. The prince came from Germany and, in that country, it was a tradition to bring a tree into the home, at Christmas, and decorate it with candles and ornaments. He wanted to share this pleasure and arranged for a tree to be brought to the palace. As a child, Victoria had been aware of, and enjoyed, this custom in her own home. Each year, after that, increasing numbers of families thought that it was a good idea and, today, Christmas trees are to be found in virtually every home. There's a Christmas tree to suit every sort of Christmas, from the traditional, tall evergreen to go with log fires and cosy rooms full of chatter and laughter; to the cheerful, bright artificial ones for the 'young ones' on the go; to the sophisticated or glitzy variety that add the festive note to Christmas in the loft apartment; and all the ones in between!Whatever its shape, size or colour, half the fun of Christmas is the anticipation as the pile of presents beneath the tree grows and grows.

Every year London has a very special Christmas tree, in Trafalgar Square. It is sent by the the people of Norway and is a symbol of the friendship that has existed between the two countries since the years of World War ll when they were allies against the axis powers of Germany.
